Top 4 Tips for Dressing Modestly in Summer

Ah summer no school, hanging out with friends, and hot weather! Modest dressers worst enemy. Seeing girls walking around in short skirts and tank tops while I had to wear jeans and a T-shirt sweating like a pig I always wondered how to dress modestly and still look cute. Low and behold I'm traveling to Africa this summer and will have to find modest outfits to wear while avoiding the heat. These are my top four tips that I've found very helpful to dress modestly in hot weather.

    SKIRTS, SKIRTS, SKIRTS!!!

As much as I love jeans that tight, thick, fabric just won't work in the heat. So what other option can you turn to? Skirts! specifically, maxi skirts (skirts that go to your ankle). These allow for air to flow freely so you aren't too hot. Pairing a maxi skirt with a T-shirt and blouse is going to be my go-to outfit on this trip.

I've found that many stores that sell maxi skirts always have a slit in them which was a real deal-breaker for me; however, there is a simple fix to this reoccurring problem. Simply sew the slit shut and boom! you've got yourself a modest maxi skirt. Maxi dresses also work simply by themselves or with a shirt overtop.

    Playing with Fabrics

One of the most important things for modest dressers to understand is that you don't need to have less fabric on to stay cool. Many women in hot climates like Saudi Arabia get by fine, the question is how? Simply wearing fabrics that are thin and allow for air to pass through. My go-to fabrics for this trip will be cotton, linen, and jersey (I'll link a good article that talks about the best and worst fabrics for summer). These fabrics are breathable and don't retain moisture which is great for when you're sweating a lot.

    Necklines

During summer, stores will often sell clothing will low v necks, square necks, and a line necklines. Normally I'd say an easy fix for this would be to layer a long sleeve shirt under but that would be begging to die of a heat stroke. So my solution? for V necks sew it so the neckline is higher, as for square necks and a line necklines I suggest buying turtle neck tank tops made out of a breathable fabric I mentioned above to layer under.

    Colors

The last tip I have is to pick certain colors to wear in the summer that don't absorb sunlight such as black, brown, and other dark colors. Good colors for summer would be pink, yellow, white, and other pastels. The general rule is the darker the color the more sunlight it will absorb and the lighter the color the less sunlight it will absorb.
